VAN DEN GOOR, Peter
Managing Director and Owner of Katunga Fresh
Originally from the Netherlands, Peter and his wife Marjan moved to Katunga more than 20 years ago to start a tomato nursery. When Peter arrived in Australia, he found that Katunga has beautiful bore water, lots of sunlight in winter, and had a gas line running through the town – which were the 3 things you needed for a hydroponic business. What started as a small plastic hothouse is now a large 21-hectare glasshouse facility. Katunga Fresh now produces over 12 million kilograms of hydroponic tomatoes and capsicums annually, supplying close to 50% of the tomatoes in Victoria. Peter understands first-hand the impact climate change can have and has taken significant action towards decarbonising his operations, such as having quad-generation and a pyrolysis plant onsite. The key driver for implementing a quad-generation solution at the site was to improve energy efficiency, as well as provide additional power capacity.
Meanwhile, the onsite pyrolysis plant, not only removes and locks away carbon from the atmosphere but also produces a clean, net-zero fuel that can replace fossil fuels for heat and/or power generation.
